The epic meeting point of the outback and the ocean.

The Great Australian Bight, or “Edge of Australia” as many call it, is the longest continuous cliff coast line in the Southern Hemisphere. It’s the epic meeting point of the outback and the ocean. Here, more than 1,000 kilometres of cliffs tower up to 60 metres before dramatically dropping into the Southern Ocean. Standing at one of the many lookouts will literally take your breath away.

What does The Great Australian Bight mean? Great – large, magnificent, epic. Australian – part of this vast country, Terra Australis. Bight – in nautical terms, a large open bay. This vast stretch of coastline straddles southern Australia some 1,160 kilometres from Cape Carnot in South Australia to Cape Pasley in Western Australia.

The Bight came into existence when Gondwana broke apart and separated Antarctica from Australia around 50 million years ago. The coastline of the Great Australian Bight is characterised by cliff faces, surfing beaches and rock platforms, ideal for whale-watching.
