Making nature more accessible

We believe meaningful travel should be available to more people, and we’re committed to creating experiences where everyone feels welcome, supported, and inspired by nature. Inclusion is one of our core values, and Culture & Inclusion is a key pillar in our Roadmap Towards Regeneration.

Our Tours & Accessibility

Many of our tours explore wild, remote parts of Australia — including national parks, off-grid campsites, and rugged coastlines. Because of this, some experiences, particularly our adventure-based itineraries, may present accessibility challenges, especially for people travelling with a disability, limited mobility or those using wheelchairs.

We believe in being open about these limitations, while also highlighting how we can support you, adapt certain aspects, or suggest alternative options that still deliver an enriching experience.

Private Tours & Custom Options

Looking for something more flexible? We offer private tours and work closely with travellers through our dedicated Made For You Manager. Together, we can customise your journey — from vehicle type and accommodation to activities, pacing, and specific access needs.

Whether you’re travelling with mobility considerations, a support person, or a small group, we’ll do our best to co-create an experience that works for you.

Common FAQs for Travellers With Specific Needs

We know that everyone’s needs are different — and we’re here to help.

If you have any accessibility requirements, we encourage you to get in touch before booking. Our team will work with you to understand your needs, talk through the itinerary, and explore ways we can adapt your experience. Whether it’s mobility, sensory, cognitive, or health-related support — we’re committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and memorable journey for all travellers.

Accessible Travel FAQ’s

Mobility & Wheelchair Access

We don’t currently have a wheelchair-accessible van in our own fleet. However, guests who can self-transfer (or be assisted by a travel companion) may still be able to join our private tours, which are operated in Toyota Sahara 4WDs or Mercedes Sprinters.

We also work with a trusted transport partner who provides fully accessible vehicles. If this suits your needs, we can include accessible transport in your custom tour quote.

Yes, though it depends on the tour style. Untamed Escapes offers everything from swag camping adventures to luxury private tours. Because many of our tours take place in remote regions, including national parks and unsealed terrain, some experiences present accessibility challenges.

Below, we’ve outlined which tours may suit you and the options available for those with mobility needs.

PRIVATE TOURS

We offer a range of private tours across Australia that can be adapted to suit your access needs. Our Groups & Charters Manager, Adam, and Administration Assistant, Leesa (a wheelchair user herself), will work closely with you to plan a trip that’s safe, comfortable, and inclusive, from choosing suitable vehicles and accessible accommodation to adjusting the pace, activities, and meals.
Whether you’re travelling with a mobility aid, support person, or small group, we’ll do our best to co-create a journey that works for you. Contact us to chat through the possibilities.

ADVENTURE TOURS

Our scheduled small group adventure tours are not suitable for wheelchair users or those with limited mobility. These tours involve:

  • Daily hikes of 2–10 km on uneven, unsealed ground
  • Activities like sandboarding, surfing, and swimming
  • Swag camping, which involves getting up and down from ground-level bedding

These tours are best suited to guests with a moderate to high level of physical mobility and independence.

Yes. Our private tour vehicles — Toyota Sahara 4WDs and Mercedes Sprinters — can store foldable wheelchairs, walking frames, or other mobility aids. If you’re able to self-transfer (or with help from a companion), you’re welcome to travel with us.

If you’re joining a private tour, we can absolutely tailor your itinerary with shorter walks or alternative activities while others hike. On scheduled small group tours, options are more limited due to fixed itineraries and remote locations.

Our Port Lincoln & Coffin Bay Day Tours are a great option. These experiences involve minimal walking, vehicle-based sightseeing, and access to developed facilities. We can also customise a private tour to suit your pace and comfort level.

Yes. Our Port Lincoln & Coffin Bay Day Tours include short walks and some accessible paths. If you’re after a low-impact adventure, we can also tailor a private tour with minimal walking, more rest time, and immersive nature or cultural experiences.

Many of the accommodation providers we work with on private tours offer accessible rooms and facilities. During planning, we’ll work with you to ensure the accommodation matches your needs, and we’re happy to connect you directly with the property if you have specific questions.

We take a personalised approach to accessibility. We’ll work with you before your tour to understand your needs and help plan around any challenges — from transport and pacing to dietary needs and support. Our guides are trained in inclusive practices and are committed to creating a respectful, supportive, and safe experience for everyone.

Vision & Sensory Support

We do our best to support guests with low vision, particularly on private tours where we can personalise the experience. Our guides can provide one-on-one support — such as walking beside you on trails, offering verbal cues, and helping navigate uneven terrain.

That said, due to the remote and physically demanding nature of many of our itineraries, our tours may not be suitable for travellers who are blind and not travelling with a support person. Trails may be rugged, uneven, or unsealed, and many experiences take place in natural, off-grid environments.
If you’re blind and travelling with a companion who can assist you, we’d love to chat and see whether we can design a safe and enriching private tour for you.

For travellers looking for more specialised support or fully hosted experiences, we highly recommend Cocky Guides. An incredible Australian not-for-profit social enterprise that specialises in providing unique, multi-sensory adventures in small groups for the blind and low-vision community.

Yes. Our Port Lincoln & Coffin Bay Day Tours and customised private tours are better suited to guests with low vision. These itineraries include shorter walks, accessible facilities, and fewer terrain-based challenges. They can also be adapted to include more sensory experiences, such as wildlife encounters, food and wine tastings, or cultural storytelling.

Our guides are trained to assist guests with a range of needs and can use verbal descriptions, guidance techniques, and other support methods when requested in advance. We don’t currently offer specialised tactile maps or braille materials, but we’re happy to collaborate with you to find the best way to share information during your journey.

Assistance Dogs

Yes. We welcome accredited assistance dogs on all of our tours and in our vehicles, in line with Australian law. Your dog is your essential support, and we’ll do our best to ensure they’re safe, comfortable, and cared for during your journey.

Assistance dogs can access national parks with prior approval. Some parks require notification due to conservation policies or baiting programs (which may involve 1080 poison, harmful to dogs).

If your tour includes a national park, we’ll need to submit a request in advance — our reservations or operations team will manage this for you. Please get in touch with us as early as possible so we can handle the paperwork and ensure your dog’s safety.

We aim to create a respectful and inclusive environment for everyone. If your assistance dog is joining a scheduled group tour, we’ll notify fellow travellers in advance as a courtesy — particularly if there are any allergies.

If a conflict arises, we’ll do our best to offer alternative solutions, such as moving one party to another departure or offering an upgraded travel option at a reduced rate (where possible). Your comfort and accessibility needs are important to us, as is the well-being of everyone on tour.

Hearing Impairment & Deaf Guests

Yes — we’ve had the privilege of welcoming guests with hearing impairments on several of our tours, including adventure experiences. We aim to provide clear, accessible communication to ensure everyone feels supported and informed throughout their journey.

For guests who are hard of hearing or deaf, our guides can adapt communication styles to meet your needs, and we’ll work with you ahead of time to plan any specific support.

Here’s how we help support guests with hearing impairments:

  • Printed itineraries and daily briefings so you can follow along with the commentary and stay up to date with the plan.
  • Printed Interpretation Guide of the destinations we are travelling through.
  • Written instructions for important information like timings, safety briefings, and meal plans.
  • Visual communication — our guides ensure you can clearly see their face when speaking (for lip reading) and will check for understanding when explaining activities or safety procedures.
  • Emergency protocols — for accommodation, we can request visual alert systems (e.g. flashing light alarms), and our guides will be placed in a nearby room when possible to assist during any emergency.

Most of our tours can be enjoyed by guests who are deaf or hard of hearing. Private tours and Port Lincoln day tours tend to offer more flexibility, but we’re happy to discuss any tour you’re interested in and explore how we can make it more accessible for you.

For private and accommodated tours, we’ll inform hotel partners in advance of your hearing needs. We’ll request rooms with visual alert systems, like flashing alarms or vibrating pillows, where available.

We’ll also make sure your guide is staying nearby and understands your needs in case of an emergency. On swag camping tours, we’ll work with you directly to agree on a visual or physical cue system, so you always feel safe and supported.

Dietary Requirements

Yes — we cater to a wide range of dietary requirements, including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, nut-free, and halal where possible. To ensure we can meet your needs, please let us know at the time of booking.

Once a tour has started, we may not be able to source alternative meals, especially in remote locations or national parks

Where possible, yes — particularly in urban areas or on private tours where we have more flexibility. However, on our adventure tours, halal-certified meals may not always be available due to the remote nature of the regions we visit.

In these cases, we’ll offer vegetarian or plant-based meals as a respectful alternative and ensure they’re nutritionally balanced with appropriate protein and variety.

To help us deliver the best experience (and avoid stress mid-journey), please include all dietary details when you book.

Hidden Disabilities

We recognise that not all disabilities are visible and we’re committed to creating a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for all travellers.

If you’re travelling with a hidden disability or health condition, we encourage you to speak with us before booking. This allows us to understand your needs, explore what support we can offer, and ensure the experience is a good fit.

We’ll brief your guide and take practical steps to help you feel comfortable, safe, and supported throughout your journey.

Depending on your needs and the type of tour you choose, we may be able to:

  • Adjust the pace of the day or include more rest breaks
  • Clearly outline the daily schedule to reduce uncertainty
  • Support you in group settings or create quieter moments as needed
  • Offer alternative activities if specific experiences don’t feel right for you

If you think you’d benefit from more flexibility, a private tour may be a great option. These experiences allow us to tailor the itinerary, pacing, and environment specifically to your preferences — and we’ll work closely with you to co-create a journey that feels right for you.

Yes, please. Sharing your needs with us at the time of booking helps us make your experience more comfortable and allows our guides to be prepared with the right support and awareness. All information is handled with care and confidentiality.

While we don’t currently offer formal neurodiversity or mental health training for our guides, it’s something we’re actively exploring as we continue our journey toward more inclusive tourism. In the meantime, our team is committed to listening, learning, and supporting you however we can.

Other Medical Needs

It depends on the type of tour you’re joining.

On accommodated tours: Many accommodations have a small fridge in the room where you can store medication that needs to stay cool. If your room doesn’t have one, your guide can store it in the tour vehicle’s esky or fridge during travel days.

On camping or swag-based tours: Your guide can store temperature-sensitive medication in the esky used for food and drinks. Be sure to let them know at the start of the tour so it’s kept secure and easily accessible.

For any medication, we recommend keeping essential doses in your daypack, especially during drives or stops in remote areas.

Yes — but it depends on the style of tour you’re joining and the type of CPAP machine you use.

If you’re travelling on an accommodated tour, you will have access to mains power. However, if you’re joining a camping tour, power access is limited. Here’s what to consider:

  • Modern CPAP machines that run on rechargeable power banks are often suitable. We recommend bringing 1–2 fully charged power banks that are compatible with your device.
  • For older CPAP models that require wall power only, it’s important to speak with your doctor about going without the machine, as full power may not be available on all nights.
  • Some travellers bring their own camping power packs, which can run a CPAP machine overnight and charge devices like phones. If you’d like to explore this option, we’re happy to share what has worked for other guests.

Yes—you’re welcome to bring a foldable stretcher if it helps improve your comfort while swag camping. It must be compact and foldable enough to fit in the vehicle trailer alongside your personal gear. If you’d like help sourcing one, our team may be able to recommend a lightweight option.

Health & Safety in Remote Areas

Your safety is our top priority, and our guides are trained in remote area first aid and emergency protocols. However, many of our tours operate in remote locations — including national parks and off-grid regions — where access to medical care can be limited or delayed.

In the event of an incident:

  • Our guide will assess the situation and provide first aid as needed
  • We’ll get you back to the nearest vehicle-accessible location or car park
  • From there, we’ll coordinate help, whether that’s local emergency services, ambulance, or air evacuation

For serious incidents, evacuation times can vary depending on location and weather conditions — so it’s essential to be prepared.

While travel insurance is not mandatory, we strongly recommend it, especially for remote travel. Even if you have Medicare and private health cover, travel insurance can protect you from unexpected costs such as:

  • Ambulance or medical evacuation (e.g. airlift from a national park)
  • Hospital fees if you’re not admitted immediately
  • Changes to your travel plans due to illness or injury

Some Australian insurers now offer domestic travel insurance that includes medical evacuation. It’s worth checking that your policy covers ambulance services and remote incidents.

If you have any health concerns or questions about travel insurance, we encourage you to speak with a provider before your tour or reach out to our team so we can guide you in the right direction.

Companion Card

Yes — we honour Australian Companion Card holders by offering a 40% discount on Untamed Escapes-operated travel for an eligible companion or carer, while the primary traveller pays the full fare.

This discount applies only to the transport component and does not cover third-party costs, such as accommodation, meals, national park entry fees, or outsourced activities.

If you’re planning to travel with a companion or support person, please let us know at the time of booking so we can make the necessary arrangements and ensure a smooth experience for both of you.

A Journey Towards Better

We’ve recently completed an Accessibility Audit and are actively working to improve accessibility across all touchpoints — from vehicle access and tour design to guide training and guest communications. This is an ongoing journey, and we welcome feedback as we continue to evolve. Our goal is to ensure more people with disabilities and accessibility needs can experience the freedom, connection, and transformation that Untamed Escapes offers.
