Frequently Asked Questions

Below is a collection of answers to our most frequently asked questions that may help with some of your queries. If you don’t see the answer to your question, please get in touch with us.

We also suggest you read the Booking Terms & Conditions page where we provide more details about our tours and Health & Safety requirements.

What clothes should I bring?

Australia has a relaxed attitude to standards of dress. However, depending on the time of year you are travelling, you may need to be prepared for the extremes. Temperatures in Southern Australia in winter (June, July, August) can get quite cold with daytime temperatures from 10 to18 degrees Celsius and nighttime temperatures can reach zero. Please ensure you pack appropriately. You’ll be nice and snug when travelling in the vehicles and staying in your accommodation but for the outdoor activities you’ll need warm jackets and a raincoat, just in case.

In summer, daytime temperatures can be extreme from November to April with temperatures generally in the 30s but sometimes reaching over 40 degrees Celsius. Be prepared to endure extra physical stress due to the heat at these times, especially while on walks. If travelling in summer we recommend that you bring loose, cool, cotton clothing to protect yourself from the harsh sun. A sun hat, sunscreen and sunglasses are a must.

What other things to pack?

With luggage restrictions you need to pack sensibility and light. Please ensure you have comfortable walking shoes, a hat, jacket, raincoat, sunglasses, water bottle or camelbak, swimmers, beach towel and of course a camera.

For cooler months if you are camping we strongly recommend beanies, thermals, thick warm socks and gloves. It can get very cold during the night.

What vehicles do we travel in?

On our private tours we travel in an Executive 7 seater 4WD (Toyota Sahara Landcruiser) or a Luxury Sahara 4WD. Small group tours and charters depending on group size will travel in a Toyota Commuter (14 people) or Toyota Coaster Bus (20 people).

Something to keep in mind is here in Australia we’re used to driving long distances on holiday, but you may not be. Take for example our 10-day Perth to Adelaide trip, this is about the same distance from Spain to Poland. Yes, it’s a big country! However, that’s why we think seeing Australia from the ground is better. We live in a country that has it all; stunning coastline and beaches, the outback, tropical rainforests, and some seriously amazing landscapes and wildlife. Whilst you may spend some days in the vehicle a little longer than others getting to the next destination, we think it’s worth it!

Who is our guide?

Our Storyteller Guides are the heart and soul of our business and most have worked for us for many years. So whoever you have, you can be assured they are highly experienced and professional guides, whose mission will be to make sure you have the trip of a lifetime. They will entertain you with stories and educate you with their incredible knowledge providing information on the places, history, culture and wildlife of areas you are travelling through. They will keep you safe and of course make sure everyone is having a great time.

In addition, all of our Guides are First Aid trained and certified. We carry a satellite phone on all of our remote/overland trips to be used by our guide in the event of an emergency and for your safety.

What sort of accommodation do we stay in?

We stay with a range of quality accommodation providers across South Australia and Western Australia, many of whom are multi-award-winning businesses. The style and level of accommodation you stay in depends on the tour you book. For example, on our small group and private tours, you will be staying in a range of 3.5-star to 4-star accommodation from hotels, motels, eco retreats and cabins. On our luxury tours, you’ll stay in the best luxury accommodation our regions have on offer. On our camping tours of course it will just be a swag under the stars. While on our Retreats Reimaged tours we offer a range of accommodation from glamping to luxury retreats.

You will find the name and location of the accommodation for each tour on each day-by-day itinerary.

What is a swag?

When camping, we use single swags. Swags are ‘Aussie Bed Rolls’ made from sturdy canvas with a mattress built into the swag. Passengers need to provide a sleeping bag and pillow to insert into the swag. Our wet weather option is a 3-person dome tent shared by two people.

Can I hire a sleeping bag?

For hygiene and operational reasons we don’t offer sleeping bag hire on our camping trips so you will need to bring your own. You can purchase a sleeping bag for around $30 at any department or camping store in Australia. If you are doing quite a lot of camping whilst here we’d recommend investing in a better quality one that will keep you warm in extreme conditions.

If you don’t require a sleeping bag after your tour, our guide will happily take it from you and donate it to charity.

Can dietary requirements be catered for?

We are happy to cater to passengers with most special diets but these and or food allergies MUST be informed at the time of booking. Some of the food for the trip is purchased prior to commencement and special requirements cannot be catered for after departing. If you have not notified us prior to departure, you may be asked to pay for any additional food yourself. Many of our meals are at restaurants, so it is also beneficial if we can advise them prior to our arrival.

Can I bring all my luggage with me?

We recommend packing sensibly as there is limited space in our vehicles. We have a 15kg maximum luggage limit and one day bag for the bus.

If you are on a tour with a flight, please be aware they are operated by Rex who have 15kg luggage restriction per person plus one 7 kg carry on.  However, upon presenting a valid itinerary or ticket, passengers with international connections are permitted 20 kg. For more details on Rex Baggage Allowance please visit their website.

On our extended tours we highly recommend you leave some of your luggage at your return accommodation in Adelaide or Perth and just bring the essentials with you. You will find most hotels willing to do this free of charge if you have a return booking.

How physically fit do I need to be?

Our tours have different fitness requirements depending on what they are. For example our Adventures to Awaken tours can have hikes from 3 km to 9 km each day. Therefore a medium level of fitness is required and doctors certificate is required for people over 70 years. While on the other hand our Gourmet Getaways, Exclusive Escapes and Day tours have very little or light activities. While we do some bush walking there is nothing too strenuous on these tours unless the passengers request it.

In the Need to Know section on the individual tours you will find any specific fitness requirements.

Where will I be picked up from?

You pick up location varies for each tour and is stated in day one of the day-by-day itineraries on each tour page.  As soon as you make a booking we send you a Pre-Departure Information pack which outlines all of the extra information you need.

We have a group of 30 wanting to do a tour, can you help us?

Absolutely! Just head to our Group Charters page and complete an online inquiry.

What happens if my tour is cancelled due to COVID-19?

We have relaxed our cancellation policy so offer peace of mind when booking. Please read our full Booking Terms & Conditions which explain in detail our refund and cancellation policy.
