Itinerary

Swag camping on Kangaroo Island

Day 1: Adelaide to Kangaroo Island

Today, there’s an early start to catch your 6.45 am SeaLink bus transfer from Adelaide CBD to the ferry terminal at Cape Jervis. Board the ferry for a 45-minute cruise to Penneshaw on Kangaroo Island. Your Untamed Escapes Guide will meet you here and give you an overview of the adventure ahead for the next few days. Throughout your tour, you’ll also have the opportunity to become a citizen scientist and contribute to conservation efforts and research on the island in partnership with Passport to Recovery. You can download the App on the way over on the ferry, so you’re ready to go!

Hop on board the bus and take a scenic coastal drive to Pennington Bay on the island’s south coast. With powerful swells rolling in, this beach is famed for its epic surf breaks. Climb the 500 steps to the top of Prospect Hill, the highest point on Kangaroo Island, for rewarding views and to get your bearings.

Kangaroo Island is the world’s oldest bee sanctuary and is home to the only pure strain of Ligurian Bee in the world. Pop into a honey farm to learn all about these fascinating creatures and, of course, do a tasting. We’ll have a picnic lunch here before setting off to Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Oil Distillery and family-owned Dudley Wines, where you can sprawl out on their lush lawns and take in the incredible views over the ocean – the perfect place to relax and connect with your fellow travellers.

Come late afternoon, arrive at our campsite, aptly named “Happiness”. Featuring private access to one of Kangaroo Island’s most stunning beaches – Antechamber Bay, you’ll be right at home here for the next two nights. Enjoy some free time to relax or take a walk down to the beach.

Tonight, roll out your swag underneath the billions of stars of the Milky Way and feel an incredible connection with nature.

Today, we drive approximately 240 km.

Accommodation

Swag camping is on private property (see Know Before You Go for more information).

Day 2: Kangaroo Island

After breakfast, it’s time for an incredible wildlife encounter. Seal Bay is home to the third-largest colony of endangered Australian sea lions, with around 800 calling the bay home. Join a 45-minute tour with the National Parks & Wildlife guides, who know pretty much everything there is to know about these beautiful creatures. Follow a boardwalk through the dunes down to the beach, and on the way, pass sea lions snoozing or even lying in the middle of the beach path and learn about conservation efforts to save this endangered species.

Next, we’ll set our coordinates for the iconic Flinders Chase National Park, located at the northwestern point of the island. This park is renowned for its rock formations, impressive beaches, and abundant wildlife.

At Admirals Arch, wander along a boardwalk as you soak up the serenity and keep your eyes peeled for the resident New Zealand fur seals. Marvel at the Remarkable Rocks, shaped by nature for over 500 million years.

After a full day, head back towards camp for some free time to reflect and relax before dinner.

Today, we drive approximately 350 km.

Day 3: Kangaroo Island to Adelaide

Start the final day of your tour with a morning bush walk not far from camp, and after packing up, we’ll bid farewell to Happiness. Along the quiet north coast of the island, find spectacular bird life in the shallow, calm waters of the lagoon and in the trees. Here, we will find a spot to have our final meal together, followed by a nice stroll along the water, looking for the many different species that inhabit the American River.

In the warmer months, weave your way through a labyrinth of caves before emerging at the beach voted best in Australia in 2023 – Stokes Bay. If the weather is right, enjoy some free time to snorkel among the rock pools or soak up the surrounding landscape.

This afternoon, have the opportunity to “give back” during a conservation volunteering experience. What we do this afternoon depends on the time of year, but you might find yourself collecting seeds, helping at a not-for-profit wildlife organisation or doing a beach clean-up.

After a fabulous Kangaroo Island tour, arrive in Penneshaw for your 5.30 pm ferry back to the mainland. Once you arrive in Cape Jervis, your SeaLink bus connection will have you back in Adelaide at 9 pm.

ACCOMMODATION & CAMPING

  • If it’s too cold or wet to camp outside around the campfire, there is enough room to roll out our swags indoors in the old wine cellar where our lounge, kitchen and bathroom facilities are.
  • When camping, we use single swags. Swags are ‘Aussie Bed Rolls’ made from sturdy canvas with a mattress built into the swag. Passengers must provide a sleeping bag and pillow to insert into the swag.
  • This is a camping tour, and involvement from the passengers is required. This can include helping with meals and packing up camp.

ITINERARY CHANGES

  • Weather conditions in Australia can change quickly, and our experienced guides will always put the safety of our passengers first and stay abreast of weather conditions.
  • Itinerary changes may occur to ensure we provide the best possible experience. For example, if it is wet or cold, your Guide may change the beach and outdoor activities with indoor experiences such as visiting the Lavender Farm, Georges Castle and other cellar doors. Regardless of the weather, there is plenty to do, and any itinerary changes will be communicated to the group in advance.

THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS BAD WEATHER…

Just inappropriate clothing! Peak season on the island might be summer, but for nature lovers, the cooler months provide just as much fun and adventure. After all, as the saying goes, “There’s no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing”.

In autumn, the wind is low, and the days are bright and clear. The calm weather makes autumn a wonderful time for snorkelling and bushwalking. Come winter, birdlife is teeming, and the seascapes seem even more dramatic. Kangaroo joeys emerge from their mothers’ pouches, and young koalas are easily spotted, perched on their mums’ backs. Winter is whale time with the annual migration of the Southern Right Whales. You can often spot mothers and their young resting along the sheltered bays. It is also when the bush bursts into colour as native plants bloom. It really is a photographer’s dream.

The incredible Adelaide to Perth 10 Day camping trip.
A review simply cannot sum up how amazing this trip was! If you are contemplating booking it, just do it! Home grown Aussie like myself, an expat or tourist, it's really an amazing
    … More experience for everyone.
The places you visit showcase some of the incredible beauty Australia has to offer and camping in a swag really lets you get in touch with nature. We really are a very lucky country!

TripADeal sub-contracted our 10 day Adelaide to Alice Springs adventure to Untamed Escapes and how lucky we were! Matt (our mini-bus driver and guide), was fantastic, a real legend! We felt very safe with his driving and he went above and … More beyond to make our road trip so memorable. Matt was friendly, professional and knowledgeable with a cheeky Aussie sense of humour. We would recommend that you give Untamed Adventures a go.

What an amazing way to see the Eyre Peninsula! Hassie has got to be the most informed person of the EP, and wow does he have some stories.
I will definitely be getting on an Adelaide Hills tour asap and maybe even one of their WA tours!
    … More

We did a whole day tour of Port Lincoln and it was truly the highlight of our trip. Our tour guide, Ian, was just so friendly and knowledgably about the area. It was definitely worth it and we are so glad we did it to discover the best … More of Port Lincoln!
  • Avatar Michael M. ★★★★★ 2 years ago
I had the 1-day Port Lincoln tour with Geoff. I must say I totally enjoyed the tour. I have been brought to places in PL that I thought I would never have gone to on my own. Geoff is very knowledgeable and an experienced ranger. The … More knowledge he provided about PL’s history and flora/fauna were something I have not learnt in school. He has so much experience and he cares for the environment. I was in awe at how he explained the ecosystems in the places we’ve been to. I felt like watching a documentary only I am part if it and experiencing things first hand. My fave spot would be Whaler’s Way with the Tortoise rock. It was nature at its best. I highly recommend this tour as I know you will have the best time of your life enjoying nature’s beauty in South Australia that is Port Lincoln.

In March 2021 four of us did the Best of Port Lincoln and Coffin Bay and we still talk about our experience when we catch up. From the minute we were greeted at the airport by our tour guide Ian the fun began. Ian was a fountain of information … More and he certainly made our experience memorable. He showed us many amazing sights, our hotel accommodation was A1 and our food was 10/10. Getting into our waders and sitting down at a semi-submerged water pavilion, shucking oysters washed down with some wine was an experience we will never forget. We will be back!!!

4 days of exploring and experiencing the Margaret River region. Wow wow wow, loved the visual delights, nutritional sensations, the slowness of yoga sessions, the workshops of sourdough making at One Table Farm; the education received from … More the Spice Mistress and her delightful food. The experience of tasting gin for the first time and walking an 8km section of the Cape to Cape. Thank you so much Jodie, Gem and Riley for making me feel so welcomed, you looked after us girls in every way. Glamping at Fair Harvest was a treat I’ll never forget 🤩🤩🤩

I absolutely loved my 10 day trip across the Nullarbor from Adelaide to Perth, there was not one thing I would change. The Nullarbor was on my bucket list of things to do and you can’t do it any better than living out of a swag. If you … More get the chance to swim with the seals and dolphins do it, it’s worth every cent. I just loved seeing the kangaroos on the beach over in WA and the huge trees and the bush walks we did. Don’t think about it just go ahead and do it.
  • Avatar Vaniece Kelly-Howe ★★★★★ 2 years ago
We had a wonderful West Coast adventure - whale watching and more. We loved every minute and are looking forward to Untamed day trip Escapes around Coffin Bay and Port Lincoln coming up soon!
  • Avatar Paula McManus ★★★★★ 2 years ago
We recently were treated to a fully guided whale watching tour and have been raving about it ever since. We saw things we were in awe of, went to places that we can't wait to return, learned things about the area that were amazing … More and stayed in beds that were oh so comfortable. We would recommend Untamed Escapes to anyone who wants to get the best of the Eyre Peninsula and Nullarbor Plain during whale watching season!
